U.S. Imposes 17.09% Quota on Mexican Tomatoes; Mexican Government Rejects Measure as Unjust / @m_ebrard @SE_mx >>>
#SecretaryOf Economy, #México.- The Government of Mexico was notified today of the decision of the U.S. Department of Commerce to withdraw from the Agreement to Suspend the Antidumping Investigation on Fresh Tomatoes from Mexico and to introduce a 17.09% countervailing duty on Mexican exports of this product.
The Ministries of Economy and Agriculture express their disagreement with the decision announced on Monday, as they consider it unfair and against the interests not only of Mexican producers, but also of the U.S. industry. The ground gained by fresh Mexican tomatoes in the U.S. derives from the quality of the product, and not from any unfair practice.
Since 1996, U.S. fresh tomato producers filed for injunctive relief alleging dumping by Mexican exporters, which has been suspended five times, most recently in 2019.
During the last ninety days, the Mexican government accompanied the tomato growers in their negotiation with their U.S. counterparts. The Mexican tomato growers formulated different constructive proposals to try to reach a good agreement, which, despite being very positive for the United States, were not accepted for political reasons.
Given that two out of every three tomatoes consumed in the U.S. are harvested in Mexico, the measure announced today will only hurt the pockets of U.S. consumers, as the U.S. tomato industry is not only a source of income for the U.S., but also a source of income for the U.S. economy.
