#BajaCalifornia, #México.- With the goal of promoting opportunities for exchange and professional development for teachers serving multilingual students and families—many of whom are migrants, both national and international—educational authorities from the University of Michigan, San Diego State University (SDSU), and the Baja California Department of Education participated in the Global Migration Education Initiative.
This collaboration is part of the policies promoted by Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, aimed at strengthening binational cooperation and providing greater support to educators.
The Secretary of Education, Irma Martínez Manríquez, reported that through the Undersecretariat of Basic Education, the Directorate of Indigenous and Inclusive Education, and the Coordination of the Binational Migrant Education Program, she brought together 40 teachers to participate in a series of training and analysis activities over four days.
Topics covered included the Binational Conference of Teachers of Education, Multilingual Education Leaders in the Binational Region, Global Migration Studies, and Transnational Mobile Students, among others.
As part of the program, participants took an academic and cultural tour led by Yara Amparo López López, Director of Indigenous and Inclusive Education. They visited Southwestern Community College in National City, Ve’E T’un Xavi Elementary School and the Escuela Normal Fronteriza in Tijuana, and the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego, California.
During the sessions, teachers analyzed studies on migration and Indigenous identities in a global context, using international case studies with the goal of moving toward more inclusive and responsive educational systems in the face of linguistic, territorial, and cultural complexities.
The participatory reflections and activities will allow teachers to integrate culturally affirming and sustained teaching strategies, with the support of curriculum specialists from the Marsal Family School of Education, the Baja California Secretariat of Education, United Nations agencies, and SDSU.
