«Alas y Raíces,» the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to the rights of children and adolescents / @cultura_mx >>>

#MinistryOfCulture#Mexico.- «Alas y Raíces» is the program of the National Coordination for Children’s Cultural Development (CNDCI), part of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico. It proposes actions aimed at fulfilling the cultural rights of children and adolescents aged 0 to 17.

The CNDCI has remained one of the strategic areas of the cultural sector, constantly updating its philosophy, conceptual axes, and lines of action with cutting-edge theories and methodologies on children’s cultural development, international conventions issued by public agencies, and the conviction that there is no other path than respect for the rights of children and youth.

Since its inception, the «Alas y Raíces» program has proposed different paths to transform cultural work with children and adolescents: it has promoted differentiated actions for the care of children and youth, considering the age ranges of 0 to 2 years, 3 to 5 years, 6 to 12 years, and 13 to 17 years; gender and status (orphanhood, incarcerated persons, migrants, day laborers, people with disabilities, etc.); and the varied sociocultural contexts in which they operate (urban, rural, indigenous, school, among others), seeking to make access to cultural goods and services effective through its infrastructure in the 32 states, as well as in formal and informal spaces for the promotion and development of culture and the arts.

Today, Alas y Raíces’ approach is to guarantee the exercise of the cultural rights of children and youth, recognizing them not only as subjects of law, but also as cultural agents capable of transforming their realities. Considering the participation of children and adolescents from a broader perspective enables exploration, the development of their autonomy, critical thinking, and creativity to construct their own narratives.
