#SenateOfTheRepublic, #Mexico.- Senator Mariela Gutiérrez Escalante, president of the Metropolitan Zones and Mobility Commission, expressed her concern about the lack of traffic regulation for vehicles transporting hazardous materials. She noted that many of these trucks circulate freely in urban areas, without controls or effective safety measures. She asserted that a review of the current legal framework is urgently needed. The legislator announced that the Senate will address this issue in the upcoming work sessions.

During the celebrations for the Bicentennial of Tecámac, the senator from the State of Mexico lamented the recent explosion of a tanker truck on the La Concordia Bridge in Iztapalapa. She stated that events like this should not be normalized and called for higher safety standards from companies in the sector. She emphasized the responsibility to ensure that the vehicles are in optimal condition. Lack of maintenance, she warned, is a constant that exacerbates the risks.

Road accidents involving double-trailer trucks, especially those transporting fuels or chemicals, have become frequent, she explained. These accidents, caused by excessive speed, negligence, or mechanical failure, have serious consequences. Explosions, rollovers, or collapses affect not only drivers but also entire communities. The transportation of flammable materials requires stricter surveillance, she insisted.

Gutiérrez Escalante noted that in the last ten years, at least fifty people have died in accidents involving gas tankers, not counting cases linked to other hazardous materials. Added to this figure are more than 200 injuries in different parts of the country. The senator emphasized that these tragedies could be prevented if there were more rigorous controls. The use of double trailers must be thoroughly evaluated, she added.

In 2022, the Congress of the Union approved the General Law on Mobility and Road Safety with the aim of reducing transportation accidents. This legislation also seeks to guarantee equitable access to safe and sustainable mobility systems. However, Gutiérrez Escalante warned that the implementation of these standards still faces significant challenges. Monitoring their compliance must be a national priority, he emphasized.

Finally, she cited data from the Pan American Health Organization showing that road accident deaths in Mexico have remained high. In 2016 alone, more than 16,000 people lost their lives in traffic incidents. Therefore, he considered a joint effort between authorities, legislators, and specialists urgent. «We cannot allow these vehicles to continue crossing densely populated areas with total impunity,» he concluded.
