The Monterrey government recognized the career of former governor Fernando Canales Clariond today by awarding him the municipality’s highest honor: the 2025 «Diego de Montemayor» Medal of Merit.
In an emotional Solemn Council Session held at the Pavilion M Convention Center, Mayor Adrián de la Garza presented the award to mark the 429th anniversary of the city’s founding.
He expressed his honor to be the one responsible for presenting this award to a man who was a pioneer in the state’s political life.

«Just like Diego de Montemayor, who with vision and courage founded this great city that was born free and looking to the future, centuries later, Fernando Canales Clariond opened a new era in the public life of Nuevo León by leading the first alternation of our state.
«Both, at different times, represent the same conviction that there is no predetermined destiny when there is character, will, and courage. The people of Nuevo León have always been stronger than adversity. For all this, the city of Monterrey pays him a just and deserved tribute. We do so with gratitude and pride, knowing that his great legacy will continue to inspire future generations,» the mayor concluded.
