#SupportForMothers #ParaLasJefas —- #AlcaldíaMiguelHidalgo#MéxicoCity.- In a significant call for increased social investment, the Mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mauricio Tabe, has formally requested that the Mexico City Government and the Local Congress double the allocation for the “Para las Jefas” social programme for the 2026 fiscal year. The Mayor’s proposal seeks to raise the budget from 38 million to 76 million pesos, a crucial step that would enable the scheme to encompass at least five thousand women within the borough, thereby addressing the pressing needs of numerous single mothers currently excluded due to limited resources.

Delivering the support payments to 2,577 beneficiaries at the Deportivo Plan Sexenal, Mayor Tabe used the occasion to openly challenge the City Government and its legislators to “assume public responsibility” and support a greater number of women. He stressed that nearly five thousand mothers were regrettably left out this year, underscoring the urgent need for the requested budgetary increase. “I want to ask the deputies in the City Congress, the government deputies, and our deputies to help us double the budget for the family matriarchs programme,” he stated unequivocally.

Mayor Tabe further declared that this financial commitment is an essential act of public duty and that failure to do so would be met with rightful “recrimination” from the local administration, emphasising the importance of making responsible decisions when allocating public funds. This sentiment was echoed by Carlos Gelista, the Director General of Social Development, who highlighted that the economic support is not a “gift” but a “recognition” of the tireless effort these women make to raise their children.

The Mayor also advocated for the replication of the successful “Para las Jefas” programme across the entire capital, an action he believes would significantly benefit all mothers in Mexico City. He affirmed that the distribution of bank cards was guaranteed to reach those most in need, following a rigorous socio-economic study conducted by the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s (UNAM) School of Social Work. Furthermore, Mr Gelista proudly noted that this year, for the first time, the support was extended to include underage mothers and women experiencing homelessness.

The programme’s transparency and rigour, which saw 2,577 women selected from over 7,000 applicants for 2025, reflect both the “magnitude of the necessity” and the “enormous responsibility” of the government to act with justice, transparency, and empathy. The proposed doubling of funds would ensure that Miguel Hidalgo continues to lead the way in social assistance.
