(#WorldEnvironmentDay – #Ecotourism) *** #FederalGovernment – #Mexico.- In a shift that redefines the tourism focus of the #CostaMaya, #ClaudiaSheinbaumPardo announced the drafting of a special Decree to promote #Ecotourism in the #Mahahual area, conceived in close coordination with local communities and with the participation of #Semarnat, #Sectur, #Fonatur, and the #GovernmentOfQuintanaRoo. The measure aims to replace the planned large-scale project with a model that prioritizes conservation and community development. The announcement was made during the morning press conference «#LasMañanerasDelPueblo» from the #MarinaCoatzacoalcos Shipyards, and seeks to grant Mahahual a protection status that limits mass tourism. Connected to the Yum Balam Natural Protected Area, the initiative aspires to solidify Mahahual as a benchmark for responsible tourism in the region.
Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra explained that the decree will respond to the vision of the communities, promoting investments that generate local economic and social benefits for hotels, restaurants, and small businesses. It was emphasized that any tourism development must respect ecological limits and boost jobs linked to conservation. In parallel, the «Mexico Circular» and «Holbox Circular» initiatives were presented, which are aimed at transitioning toward a circular economy that progressively reduces single-use plastics and repurposes waste as raw materials. These policies prioritize recycling on beaches and in tourist areas, integrating the participation of hoteliers and service providers.
Currently, viral reports indicate the cancellation of the planned large-scale tourism project in the area and confirm state investments of 197.5 million pesos destined for projects linked to the sargassum economy; likewise, growing citizen support and a call for working groups to guarantee community participation and transparency in the allocation of resources are being reported.
The announced commitment opens up the possibility of a tourism development that harmonizes conservation and local prosperity, always under the premise of coordination with the communities. The finalization of the decree and the implementation of «Mexico Circular» and «Holbox Circular» will define the course of Mahahual and the Costa Maya in the coming months.
