(#MuseoTextil – #CulturaViva) *** #FederalGovernment, #Mexico.- The inauguration of the Museo Textil de los Pueblos Indígenas y Afromexicanos, led by #ClaudiaSheinbaumPardo, establishes a prominent cultural venue opposite the #TemploMayor that seeks to convert ancestral and contemporary textile practices into sustainable livelihoods for artisans; the initiative foregrounds exhibition, sale and recognition as complementary mechanisms to secure fair remuneration and social dignity for those who sustain living traditions.
The institution is organised across 12 rooms that articulate the building’s history, the evolution of textile techniques and the continuity of community practices, while dedicated areas host forums, workshops and family activities; through the Original brand the museum aims to enhance commercial channels and international visibility, thereby reinforcing the cultural identity of indigenous and Afro‑Mexican peoples.
Recent official figures incorporated into the national cultural agenda report 57,475,583 visits to museums and archaeological zones between 2024 and 2026, an increase of 18 per cent over two years; in that context Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasised during the conference “Las mañaneras del pueblo” the imperative to translate heightened tourist interest into concrete benefits for textile communities, aligning conservation with social and economic inclusion.
The opening of the Museo Textil de los Pueblos Indígenas y Afromexicanos thus represents a deliberate step towards safeguarding material culture and strengthening the institutional and market supports that sustain it; by integrating exhibition, training and commercial pathways the museum seeks to ensure that custodians of these techniques receive recognition and fair recompense for their labour.
