Conafe promotes the preservation of ancestral languages with community educators who speak Tzeltal, Nahuatl and Tsotsil / @Letamaya @SEP_mx >>>

#SEP.- The Ministry of Public Education (SEP), through the National Council for the Promotion of Education (Conafe), favors the preservation, use and learning of ancestral languages with the deployment of 3,222 community educators throughout the country, of which 916 speak Tzeltal, 730 speak Náhuatl and 443 speak Tsotsil, informed its general director, Gabriel Cámara Cervera.

During the presentation of the story El gato que se perdió, written in Chinanteco, Ch’ol, O’da, Náhuatl, Tseltal, Tsotsil and English, and the inauguration of the organization’s Cultural Center in the SEP Center building, he indicated that of the 860,771 children, adolescents, mothers and fathers who receive early childhood and basic education services, 32,648 are speakers of indigenous languages.

He explained that, as a general imperative, Conafe’s educational figures must become learners of indigenous languages and promote their use and value, as a sign of solidarity and respect for the local culture.

«In a community where the majority speaks their mother tongue, the first obligation of educators is to present themselves as language learners; that is the best introduction to get closer to serving others, with the most precious thing they have: their mother tongue,» he said.
