México hosts U.S. and Canadian trade officials for T-MEC Free Trade Commission meeting / @SE_mx >>>

#SE.- Three years after the entry into force of the Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), the Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, received in Cancun, Quintana Roo, her counterparts from the United States, Ambassador Katherine Tai, and from Canada, Minister Mary Ng, to hold the Third Meeting of the Free Trade Commission (FTC). This meeting serves as a yearly ministerial-level evaluation of the administration of the trade agreement and an analysis of the achievements and challenges facing the region.

Today was mainly dedicated to bilateral meetings between the trade authorities of the three countries.

In the meeting with Ambassador Tai and the delegation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), several priority issues for the bilateral agenda were addressed, such as energy, the Carta Porte, trade in the primary sector and relevant advances in the preservation of the vaquita and biodiversity in the Upper Gulf of California.

The Mexican side claimed the labor agenda as one of the most successful in the implementation of the T-MEC commitments. However, it emphasized the importance of a reasonable and good faith use of the Rapid Response Labor Mechanism, which should be a last resort and should not be intended to replace, but rather to reinforce national institutions. On this issue, Mexico raised with the United States the concern that all cases presented must be duly grounded, that the alleged denial of union rights occurred after the entry into force of the T-MEC and that there is a commercial relationship between the plant in question and the plaintiff country.

In the bilateral meeting with Canada, talks continued on the new Mexican Mining Law, the ruling of the panel on rules of origin in the automotive sector, among other issues of shared interest. The Mexican Government acknowledged Canada’s leadership in the Ottawa Group and pledged to continue joining conciliatory efforts towards a reform of the World Trade Organization to ensure the relevance of the organization and rules-based global trade.

The first day of the FTC culminated with a dialogue between the ministers and leaders of the private sector, the purpose of which was for the governments to learn first-hand the perspectives of businessmen on how to strengthen the region’s competitiveness and attract jobs and more production chains to North America. This is the first time that the FTC has met with representatives of the private sector from the three countries.
