#IMSS.- A multidisciplinary team of specialists from the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1 «Vicente Guerrero», of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Guerrero, saved the life of a 4-year-old girl who received a stray bullet in the thorax, which affected several organs and kept her in a serious condition.

Originally from Acapulco, little Melody «N» was at home when Brenda, her 27-year-old mother, noticed the bleeding in the child’s chest and visualized that it was a gunshot wound, so she covered the wound with her hand to block the bleeding and transfer her as soon as possible to HGR No. 1.

The IMSS hospital pediatrician, Diana Hernández Calzada, explained that the minor was received in the shock room, where the mother continued to restrain the child’s chest, which undoubtedly prevented her death due to hemorrhage.

Pediatricians, general practitioners and emergency physicians immediately attended the little girl, identifying a massive hemothorax (thoracic injury). Due to the trajectory of the bullet, which could have been fatal, the spleen and lungs were involved, as well as the abdominal bleeding.

«Both the family member and the initial team did their best to contain and give time to do everything that was needed to stabilize the patient; damage to vital parts was avoided,» the physician mentioned.

The pediatric surgeon of this same hospital, Ana Gabriela Segura Basurto, explained that the care consisted of placing an endopleural probe (a flexible tube placed between the ribs, in the pleural space), followed by an exploratory laparotomy, which determined which organs were damaged by the projectile.
