#SRE.- Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) delivered to the federal Ministry of Culture, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), a piece of great archaeological and historical relevance, recovered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Mexican Consulate in Frankfurt, Germany. This object -in accordance with the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic and Historic Monuments and Zones- is part of the cultural heritage of our country.

The recovery of this archaeological object, of great historical and cultural importance, is the result of the joint work of both Secretariats and the INAH, since thanks to the investigation and report prepared by the specialists of the Institute and the legal arguments presented by our Representation in Germany, the voluntary restitution of the object, which was in the possession of an antique store, was achieved.

Mexican legislation strictly regulates the protection and conservation of the goods that make up the nation’s heritage and strictly prohibits the export of archaeological pieces; therefore, their appearance abroad is presumed to be the result of looting, plundering or part of a chain of illicit acts, for which reason their recovery and eventual restitution to the country is sought.

Given its characteristics, it is a cultural object owned by the Mexican nation, made in the northern lowlands of Yucatan, during the Late Classic and Postclassic Mesoamerican periods (750-1244 A.D.), very similar to the structures of the Archaeological Zone of Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico.

The relief carved in rock, Mayan style, representing a skull in profile, was part of a wall of carved skulls, which evokes the Tzompantli, name given to the palisades or wooden structures in which rows of human skulls of warriors or prisoners who were sacrificed in ceremonies were placed as part of religious rituals in Mesoamerica.
