#SRE.- Since the disappearance of Carlos Tomás Aranda Burgoin in the Osoyoos region of British Columbia, Canada, on July 7, 2023, personnel from the Consulate General of Mexico in Vancouver and the Directorate General of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning of this Secretariat have provided assistance and protection.

The consular representation contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia, the authority that has spearheaded the location actions, as soon as it received information on the case. Several search missions have been carried out in the region in collaboration with Oliver/Osoyoos Search & Rescue. Drones, mounted police personnel, volunteer groups, canine binomials and sophisticated equipment appropriate to the topography of the region have been used.

On July 10, the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Protection staff received Mr. Octavio Aranda Ortega and Josué Aranda Burgoin, Carlos’ father and brother, to attend to the case, as well as to arrange the renewal of Mr. Aranda Ortega’s passport so that he could travel to Canada.

On July 14, authorities toured the search area in the company of Carlos’ family members and spoke with the officers in charge of the investigation, including the last officer who saw him. On the other hand, Consulate General staff visited the last places where Carlos was sighted, as well as the last people who interacted with him.

The Representation requested the support of the Center for Information and Assistance to Mexican Persons (CIAM) to investigate whether there is a record of Carlos in the databases of the U.S. immigration authorities, without any results. We also facilitated a conference call between Carlos’ father and the consulting attorney, Octavio Zertuche, to address questions and concerns about the Canadian legal system and the investigation process in that country. Interviews with local media have also been facilitated to publicize the search efforts.
