Sustainability, an engine of the economy, social development and harmony with nature in tourist destinations / @TorrucoTurismo @SECTUR_mx >>>

#SECTUR.- The head of the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) pointed out that, through joint work with institutions such as the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Mexico, the National Forestry Commission (GIZ), among others, the aim is for tourism to be increasingly in harmony with nature, as part of the Mexico Reborn Sustainable Strategy.

He emphasized that the GEF has financed 7.2 million dollars for biodiversity conservation in three coastal destinations: Sierra La Laguna – La Paz and Los Cabos, B.C.S.; Maya Ka’an Region, Quintana Roo; and the Huatulco – Chacahua Corridor, Oaxaca, of the Kuxatur Project, with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

In this sense, he emphasized that Kuxatur, which in Mayan means «living tourism», is focused on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in tourist destinations, with special emphasis on coastal ecosystems.

Likewise, the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, through GIZ, provided 5 million euros to implement ecosystem-based climate change adaptation measures in 6 tourist destinations as part of the Adaptur Project (Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit-Jalisco, San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato, Los Cabos in Baja California Sur, Valle de Bravo in the State of Mexico and Mexico City).

The Secretary of Tourism also pointed out that support has been given to the conservation of ecosystems in 1,843 hectares in tourist destinations, through the Payment for Environmental Services scheme managed before the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), as well as the restoration of 180 hectares of coastal dunes through the Adaptur project.
