Diabetic foot, one of the most feared complications of this disease: Issste / @drpedrozenteno @ISSSTE_mx >>>

#ISSSTE.- Diabetic foot is the third leading cause of hospital admission for complications, due to the microvascular damage it causes. In severe stages it increases the risk of disability, amputation and death, making it one of the most feared but highly preventable comorbidities, informed Damayanty Gómez Villanueva, coordinator of Internal Medicine at the General Hospital (HG) Tacuba of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Issste).

It is a syndrome that includes various symptoms, she explained, mainly the presence of ulcers with or without infection. «When these lesions evolve to severe stages, the plantar ulcer becomes deeper, can reach the bone and cause necrosis due to ischemia, which is known as gangrene, an infection that progresses very quickly. Therefore, it is important to be attentive to changes in skin coloration, such as darker spots, in order to attend to them immediately.»

The patient who lives with long-standing diabetes becomes multipathological and in this sense there are several factors that can contribute to the development of this condition, he explained.

One of these harmful habits,» the specialist pointed out, «is that the person keeps his glucose level out of control for long periods of time (above 140), that he has neuropathy, that is, loss of sensitivity in his feet and does not feel if he has a blister if his shoe hurts him, if he is stepped on, if a nail gets buried. The degree of vascular calcifications caused by the underlying chronic disease and whether there is associated renal pathology or arterial disease due to other causes also play a role.
