#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador attended the commemorative act for the 50th anniversary of the Chilean coup d’état at the Plaza de la Constitución in Santiago.

Accompanied by Dr. Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, the President arrived at La Moneda Palace, where he delivered a message to the Chilean people reaffirming the ties of brotherhood with Mexico, as well as the affection and respect for Salvador Allende, whom he considered the «Apostle of Democracy in Chile».

He said that his legacy makes him a symbol of the dignity of public servants around the world.

The Chief Executive assured that the peoples of Mexico and Chile will continue to be united by the ideals of freedom, justice, democracy and unrestricted respect for sovereignty.

During the event, official mourning was declared and homage was paid to the victims of the coup d’état of September 11, 1973 and the subsequent military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet with a minute’s silence; flags were flown at half-mast.

Chilean artists participated in the ceremony; among the performances was that of pianist Valentín Trujillo Sánchez, who interpreted the Chilean National Anthem. The Agrupación de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos (AFDD) performed a dance form of the cueca, Chile’s national dance, as a peaceful protest, carrying a white handkerchief for all the victims of forced disappearance.
