UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concludes visit to México / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Ministries of the Interior (Segob) and Foreign Affairs (SRE) inform that the visit of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) to our country, which took place from September 18 to 29, concluded today.

During the twelve days of work, the Group held 19 meetings with 44 federal and local institutions from the states of Chiapas, Nuevo Leon and Mexico City.

In accordance with its mandate, the WGDA delegation visited federal social readaptation centers, immigration facilities, as well as state social reinsertion centers and centers for adolescents in conflict with the law; they also visited mental health specialty hospitals and social assistance and integration centers. Finally, they carried out activities in police stations and law enforcement facilities. At all times they received the openness, collaboration and support of the Mexican State authorities.

The closing meeting was headed by the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the SRE, Joel Hernández García; and the head of the Unit for the Defense of Human Rights of the Segob, Enrique Irazoque Palazuelos.

Representing the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention at the meeting were Matthew Gillett, Vice-President for Communications; Ganna Yudkivska, Vice-President for Follow-up; and Miriam Estrada-Castillo, member of the Group. Also in attendance were the Secretary of the Group, Lucie Viersma and the United Nations Officer, Clara Angélica García Orozco. The Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-HCHR) was represented by Officers Alan García Campos and David Ricardo Uribe.
