SRE and Inmujeres present progress on care issues / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres) held the dialogue «Towards the construction of Mexico’s contribution to the advisory opinion of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) on the content and scope of the right to care and its interrelation with other rights», where they presented to civil society organizations and academic specialists a draft opinion that Mexico will present to the Court on the progress and lines of argumentation of our country on this fundamental right for the development of life.

This meeting stems from Argentina’s January 20, 2023 request to the IACHR for an advisory opinion on «The content and scope of the right to care and its interrelation with other rights», where the Court is asked to precisely determine the scope of care as a human right, as well as the obligations of States in this matter.

The IACHR invited to submit a written opinion on the points submitted for consultation, in accordance with Article 73.3 of the Rules of Procedure of the Court, no later than November 7, 2023.

In the inaugural panel, the Director General of Human Rights and Democracy of the SRE, Roberto De León Huerta, stated that Mexico’s contribution is based on the strengthening of instruments in the field of human rights and seeks a more equitable and equal redistribution, revaluation and recognition in terms of care. For her part, Sandra Mendoza Durán, Inmujeres’ International Affairs Coordinator, mentioned that talking about the issue of care does not have to be an individual or family matter, but rather an issue that concerns everyone, and emphasized the importance for society of guaranteeing this right.

Mexico’s contribution to the advisory opinion includes information from 15 institutions of the Federal Executive Branch, Federal Legislative Branch and local governments involved in the issue and will be strengthened with the views of civil society organizations and academia based on the results of this dialogue. The meeting focused on three areas: i) recognition, scope and content of the right to care; ii) statistics and data on care; and iii) care and the link with other human rights.
