The XXI Edition of the «Víctor Carlos García Moreno» Competition comes to an end / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>

#SRE.- From November 6 to 10, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the «Víctor Carlos García Moreno» Competition (VCGM Competition) Procedure before the International Criminal Court, in its XXI edition, took place. The Legal Consultancy (CJA) of the SRE collaborated with the International Administration of the VCGM Competition, in which 6 teams from national and foreign universities participated, resulting in 8 preliminary rounds and a final.

The purpose of the VCGM Competition is to promote and disseminate the mandate, functions and jurisprudence of the International Criminal Court, as well as the various branches of law that converge in its activities. In this competition, the participating teams resolve a hypothetical case in which they must take the positions of the Prosecution, the Legal Representation of the Victims, and the Defense. For 20 years, the VCGM Competition has been carried out with the joint participation of universities and institutions at national and international level, and has been characterized as an event of high academic level that allows its participants to develop specialized knowledge and acquire valuable tools for the practice of their profession.

Within the framework of the oral rounds, the academic event «Hate speech, gender and digital media: Challenges and perspectives in international criminal law», in which discussions were held with the regional coordinator of Communication of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Marcela Méndez Martínez; the director of International Women’s Affairs of the SRE, Geraldine Gachuz Martínez; the professor of International Law at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, Hannah Birkenkötter; and the lawyer and independent researcher in The Hague, Fabiana Núñez del Prado Nieto.

The event addressed the challenges of international criminal justice in international humanitarian law, hate speech, gender diversity and ongoing investigations before the International Criminal Court.

In this edition, the finalist teams were from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, which won first place; the Universidad de Guadalajara, which won second place; and the Universidad de las Américas Puebla, which won third place.
