Mayan Train, a national strategy for development and social justice: Miguel Torruco Marques / @TorrucoTurismo @SECTUR_mx >>>

#SECTUR.- The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) emphasized that, in addition, Mexico’s tourism had been losing positioning in the international arena; as it is enough to recall that from 2012 to 2018, the tourism sector exercised a budget of 54 billion pesos for Sectur, the National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) and the extinct Council for Tourism Promotion of Mexico (CPTM) that yielded the following results:

  • In 2018, the Gross Domestic Tourism Product (GDPT) amounted to 1.9 billion pesos, to register a share of 8.5% with respect to the National GDP, which was 22.8 billion pesos in current values for the same year.
  • In international tourism, according to the World Tourism Organization (WTO) ranking, we ranked 7th on a global scale.
  • In terms of foreign exchange earnings, which is how a nation’s tourism potential is measured, Mexico was positioned in a distant 17th place, with an income of 22,526 million dollars.
  • In turn, in 2018 we ranked 40th in per capita spending in 2018, with per capita spending of 545.3 dollars.
  • Meanwhile, Foreign Direct Investment in Tourism, amounted to one thousand 325.6 million dollars.
  • With the purpose of facing this loss of positioning, he highlighted that in 2019 major infrastructure works began, as well as actions that responded to a change of regime, and thus to a policy of republican austerity, which at the beginning was criticized by the opposition, however, in the end would give excellent results due to the magnitude of the investments without indebtedness for tourism infrastructure.
