Mexico invites high-level U.S. delegation to jointly address immigration challenge / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- Following yesterday morning’s telephone call between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the President of the United States, Joseph Biden, the Mexican President extended a cordial invitation to U.S. authorities to discuss human mobility; the defense of the rights of Mexican citizens residing in the United States; attention to the root causes of migration; and the strengthening of binational cooperation, especially economic and social, to ensure the proper functioning of the common border.

Following the presidential instruction and on behalf of the Government of Mexico, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, transmitted the invitation to Secretary of State Antony Blinken; Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas; and White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, who is in charge of the working visit that will take place next Wednesday, December 27.

Mexico is convinced that the visit of the high-level delegation represents an opportunity, within the framework of a frank and respectful relationship, to reaffirm bilateral cooperation in the area of human mobility, particularly with regard to the regular management of migratory flows, as well as the expansion of legal channels for migration in contrast to the risks associated with irregular options.

The Government of Mexico will affirm the importance of strengthening protection mechanisms for Mexicans residing in the United States and, in safeguarding mutual interests, insisted on the need to reopen border crossings as soon as possible to guarantee dynamic trade flows and enhance the economic relationship. In addition, he will work with the U.S. delegation to increase collaboration to address the structural causes of migration based on the results of the Palenque meeting.

The Mexican President’s invitation is a continuation of the understanding reached by both presidents in San Francisco regarding the appreciation of the positive contribution of the Mexican community in the United States and the conviction that the migration problem will only find an effective response by addressing the structural causes in the countries of origin.
