The Government of Mexico receives 41 archaeological artifacts of Mexican origin / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- Today, the Government of Mexico, through the Consulate in Albuquerque, United States, received in restitution 41 archaeological pieces of Mexican origin, voluntarily handed over by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) of New Mexico.

According to a preliminary report prepared by specialists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the pieces belong to Mexican heritage, in accordance with the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic and Historic Monuments and Zones, and were made by pre-Hispanic cultures that settled in regions such as the central highlands, the west and north of the country, as well as in the current states of Oaxaca and Nayarit. Likewise, its temporality is located between the years 200 to 900 AD.

The archaeological objects were delivered by a private individual to the DAC of New Mexico, instance that, not having the certainty of the licit origin of the pieces, determined to return them to the people of Mexico.

In the ceremony of delivery, Consul Norma Ang Sanchez thanked the Executive Director of the Office of Archaeological Studies, John Taylor-Montoya, for his initiative to return, in a voluntary way, the pieces to the Mexican nation.

She also emphasized that this act reaffirms the commitment and ethics of governments in the protection of cultural heritage. In the near future, the 41 archaeological pieces will be repatriated to Mexico for their delivery to INAH, a body under the Ministry of Culture of the Mexican Government, which will be responsible for their custody, study, conservation and dissemination.

With events such as this, Mexican institutions reaffirm their commitment to actively participate in the strengthening of national and international legal frameworks for the protection of cultural heritage.
