Mexican government safeguards the country’s agrifood security / @SE_mx >>>
#SE.- The Ministries of Economy (SE), Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) and the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) inform that, since the conditions to replace the use of glyphosate in Mexican agriculture have not materialized, the interest of safeguarding the country’s agri-food safety must prevail.
According to the presidential decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on February 13, 2023, the abstention from granting authorizations and proceeding to the revocation of registrations is conditioned on three substantial points:
- Maintain agricultural production.
- Decrease the possible impact of the substitution of the substance.
- To have alternatives, agro-ecological and healthy practices, which allow completely dispensing with glyphosate, the latter is still in process.
The actions foreseen in the Decree have not yet concluded, so the Federal Executive, through the undersigned agencies, determined to continue searching for an alternative herbicide with a broad spectrum and low toxicity to replace glyphosate and to maintain the productivity of those who opt for this input.
To this end, work is being done to find options that are available in the necessary quantities, associated with national marketing chains and that are accessible in terms of cost for all types of producers.
On the other hand, Cofepris consulted -within the scope of their respective competencies- the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Environment and Natural Resources and Health on the Decree to substitute glyphosate in the country’s agricultural activities.
In this regard, Sader indicated that it is prepared to receive and evaluate the biological effectiveness of eligible agricultural inputs, when they become available, through its decentralized agency, the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica).
