IMSS calls on the population to seek medical attention for health problems caused by environmental contamination / @zoerobledo @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) called on people who have symptoms related to environmental pollution, such as respiratory tract problems, insomnia, weakness, kidney problems, gastrointestinal problems, among others, to go to the emergency and continuous admission services of the institution’s hospital units, in order to receive timely attention and appropriate treatment to improve their health and prevent damage to their integrity.

Social Security stressed that people, regardless of their age, should go to their Family Medicine Unit (UMF) when they manifest any discomfort derived from environmental pollution, which refers to the presence of any agent, physical, chemical, biological or a combination of several, in places, forms and concentrations that become harmful to the health, safety and wellbeing of the population.

Exposure to environmental pollution can increase the development of some diseases and aggravate others. Among the main ones are the increase in cardiovascular conditions, cerebral vascular events, pulmonary, cognitive functions and diabetes. It also affects the health of newborns and increases the risk of lung cancer.

The states with the highest air pollution in the country are: Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo Leon, Jalisco. Veracruz and Puebla. There are other specific municipalities in other states with high levels of agents harmful to health such as: Cuernavaca in Morelos, Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Tijuana in Baja California and Tuxtla Gutiérrez in Chiapas.

Air pollution is mainly due to gas emissions from large industries, factories and transportation. The short-term effects on the body are respiratory diseases, while in the long term it can cause various symptoms such as insomnia, weakness, kidney problems and gastrointestinal symptoms, due to the absorption of heavy metals such as lead or cadmium.

The IMSS recommends to prevent or reduce the risk that environmental pollution can cause to the body: avoid walking on busy streets during rush hour, and if you carry a small child with you, try to raise it above the level of the exhaust pipes of vehicles; avoid spending time in specific points with a high traffic density, for example, near cars stopped at traffic lights. Likewise, when you want to exercise outdoors, try to do so in less polluted areas; reduce the use of cars on highly polluted days and do not burn waste, since the smoke produced damages the health of living beings.
