IMSS calls for preventive measures to avoid heat stroke that may affect body functions / @zoerobledo @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- Due to the high temperatures registered in the country, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is calling on the population to take the appropriate preventive measures to avoid heat stroke that may affect some of the body’s basic functions due to exposure or activities under the sun.

The heat waves that have recently been registered in the country are a climatological event that is characterized by presenting sustained thermal rises, where a person with prolonged exposure to high temperatures can damage elementary actions of the body and can be very serious, to the extent of affecting vital functions.

In this sense, the head of the Medical Area of the IMSS Family Medicine Division, Dr. Arturo Díaz Hernández, pointed out that the Institute recommends the population to avoid exposure to hot environments, to place special emphasis on maintaining continuous hydration and to drink mainly plain water.

He explained that in case of outdoor activities, it is necessary to use sunscreen and light, light, long-sleeved clothing to reduce skin damage. In addition, to be in ventilated places and to avoid activities in hours of higher temperature, from 11:00 to 15:00 hours, in order to reduce the abrupt exposure to heat waves.

He added that infants or children under 5 years old and elderly people are more susceptible to be affected by heat stroke, since their heat self-regulation mechanisms are not yet developed, in the case of children, or are deteriorated, specifically in older adults over 65 years old.

He said that in order to identify a heat stroke crisis, symptoms such as increased body temperature, headache, excessive sweating, exhaustion, thirst and reddening of the face are reflected at first. «Subsequently, these symptoms may worsen and trigger a state of severity where vital functions are affected. This is called heat stroke, which is a sudden event,» he said.

The specialist from the Coordination of First Level Units of the Institute added that among the symptoms that indicate a possible heat stroke crisis are: loss of consciousness or alertness, difficulty in breathing, and even palpitations.
