«May our America be a continent of peace»: AMLO; SRE to monitor the health of Ecuador’s former vice-president / @GobiernoMX >>>

#GobiernoDeMéxico.- «I am totally in agreement that our America is a continent of peace, that it continues to be a continent of peace», stated President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in reference to the legal and peaceful stance of the Mexican Government before the International Court of Justice after the complaint against Ecuador for violations to national sovereignty and international law when it raided the Mexican embassy in Quito last April 5.

In a morning press conference, he trusted that the highest international court would promptly and expeditiously resolve Mexico’s claims, among them, the suspension of Ecuador’s rights within the United Nations Organization (UN), as long as there is no public apology and a commitment of non-repetition.

«Why do we want the International Court of Justice to rule in this way? Because if not, it would no longer be possible to live in a world governed by laws, by norms. What happened in Ecuador did not happen in Latin America, not even in the time of (Augusto) Pinochet; hundreds of Chilean brothers and sisters went to our embassy for protection and, if they managed to reach the embassy, they felt safe (…) This fearsome dictator did not dare to invade our embassy, just as other dictators in Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia did not dare to, so we do not want that», he explained.

In the future, Mexico proposes a procedure in accordance with the law and applicable to any country experiencing a similar situation. It is proposed, he said, that the determination of the International Court of Justice be debated in the UN General Assembly, where all member countries vote. If they resolve to expel the State that violated international law, the UN Security Council will not be able to exercise its right of veto.

The chief executive pointed out that the government of Ecuador also violated the right of asylum that protected the former Ecuadorian vice-president, Jorge David Glas Espinel, lodged in the embassy of Mexico when he was arbitrarily detained by police forces of that country.
