Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena travels to ministerial meeting on migration in Guatemala / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- Tomorrow, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, will participate, on instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in the Ministerial Meeting of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, held in Guatemala City. The objective of the meeting is to regionally coordinate migratory flows in a humanitarian manner, as well as to present the Mexican Model of Human Mobility and Mexico’s progress with respect to the commitments contained in the aforementioned agreement and its implementation path.

The Declaration was adopted on June 10, 2022 in the framework of the IX Summit of the Americas held in Los Angeles, California, and has been signed by 22 countries with the objective of jointly managing irregular migration in the region to ensure that it is orderly, safe, regular and humane.

The implementation of the Declaration is based on three pillars: stability and assistance to communities; regular migration channels and protection; and migration management with a humanitarian approach. Mexico heads the Working Committee on Labor Mobility and will present the studies carried out with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on labor mobility channels in the region.

Likewise, through the Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid (Comar) and in close collaboration with the United Nations Office for Refugees (UNHCR), since the signing of the Los Angeles Declaration, a total of 17,682 refugees have been integrated into Mexico’s formal labor market. In addition, our country will carry out a pilot program for the mobility of Guatemalan workers into the Mexican labor market, and Multiservice Centers for Inclusion and Development will soon be operating in Tapachula and Huixtla, Chiapas.
