#IMSS.- Through an endoscopic capsule that the patient ingests orally and captures in real time the interior of the digestive tract, doctors of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) are able to detect diseases of the small intestine and speed up diagnoses in order to initiate timely treatments.

Dr. Omar Solórzano Pineda, an endoscopist assigned to the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Service at the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of the «Dr. Bernardo Sepúlveda Gutiérrez» Specialty Hospital, National Medical Center «Siglo XXI», CDMX, explained that patients must swallow the capsule containing a camera that takes between two and six photographs per second of the digestive tract, «specifically what we are looking for is to see the small intestine. Previously, the patient must have already had a study of the upper and lower digestive tract».

Once the images have been processed, a video is made that allows a detailed visualization of the interior of the small intestine in search of digestive hemorrhage, tumors, intestinal inflammation or Crohn’s disease, surveillance of polyposis syndromes, vascular and congenital malformations, among other ailments.

«At the Hospital de Especialidades we accept patients as young as 18 years of age, we have put capsules in patients up to 90 years of age. This capsule can also be applied to pediatric patients,» said the specialist.

Solórzano Pineda reported that, in 2023, the Social Security provided 53 endoscopic capsules to patients with various pre-diagnoses, and so far this year 16 have been applied, «the procedure lasts approximately 6 to 8 hours, the patient does not have to be in the hospital the whole time; once he arrives at the colon the capsule is unloaded and it can be read in an hour to give the diagnosis».
