#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) invites its beneficiaries to go regularly to the PrevenIMSS modules and to consult their family doctor for routine blood tests or X-rays, since it is possible to diagnose multiple myeloma in a timely manner and provide early treatment that has an impact on their quality of life.
Dr. Natividad Neri Muñoz, director of the Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) Siglo XXI and expert hematologist, explained that this is a malignant disease of the blood, in which the cells alter their reproduction and turn into cancer; it can cause bone pain, fractures, bruises and anemia.
In the framework of World Multiple Myeloma Day, which is commemorated on September 5, he emphasized that it is common for symptoms to manifest themselves when the disease is in an intermediate or advanced stage and it is more common in people over 60 years of age, hence the importance of prevention.
“There may be some data that require further studies or even referral to a specialist, such as the determination of globulins, anemia without any reason, a discreet drop in platelets or that bone pain that remains, that continues and that nothing can take away,” he explained.
He pointed out that, once the diagnosis has been established, the Social Security has various resources for the treatment of multiple myeloma, among them bone marrow transplant.
Dr. Neri Muñoz pointed out that the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) in her charge has a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, where the procedure is performed routinely and with great safety for the patients; in addition, the Institute prescribes quality immunosuppressive agents, as well as chemotherapy and a wide range of immunomodulators.
