#SRE.- With support from the Government of Mexico, the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia held the departmental event “Boosting the implementation of the ethnic chapter of the Peace Agreement in Chocó”, in Colombia.
At the meeting, the Government of Mexico accompanied the actions of the Government of Colombia to promote the ethnic chapter of the 2016 Peace Agreement, which was agreed by Presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Gustavo Petro Urrego in November 2022.
State and multilateral entities, organizations and ethnic peoples committed and interested in the materialization of the ethnic chapter pointed out the specific commitments to achieve significant progress in the regions in each of the components of the chapter. They also agreed on the need to take actions to the territories to establish a direct dialogue with the communities, and therefore agreed to hold five regional meetings.
Participating in the inauguration of the event were the Mexican Ambassador to Colombia, Martha Patricia Ruiz Anchondo; the General Coordinator of Indigenous Rights of the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI), Hugo Aguilar Ortiz; and the traditional authorities of the Yaqui people, Crisóforo Valenzuela Ahumanda and Julián Molina Martínez.
Aguilar Ortiz shared the strategies and public actions carried out by the Mexican Government to guarantee the exercise and implementation of the rights of indigenous peoples. He explained the achievements of the justice plans that have worked, as exercises of planning and reparation of damages caused in the past, with the participation of the traditional authorities through their own forms of government and decision-making mechanisms, with the objective of obtaining results that help to improve the conditions of regional community life and resolve issues where there have been historical grievances.
