#IMSS.- The Central Building of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) commemorates 74 years since the inauguration of this great project, which was commissioned to the architect Carlos Obregón Santacilia by the then General Director of the IMSS, Antonio Díaz Lombardo, in order to have facilities that would provide efficient attention to the beneficiaries, while projecting an image of organization and quality.

The administrator and person in charge of this building, José Carlos Islas Campos, pointed out that construction lasted 42 months and was completed on September 13, 1950; in addition to offices, it originally housed a gas station, daycare center, bank and an annex theater, the latter of which is still preserved under the name of Juan Moisés Calleja García.

He indicated that this headquarters building, located on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, is catalogued by the National Institute of Fine Arts as an architectural heritage of the 20th Century, an extraordinary work of modern architecture in Mexico City that represents an era that defined the country’s modern culture.

He said that the building houses 1,250 workers from operational areas who are in charge of regulating and overseeing the adequate provision of services and benefits that IMSS provides to different groups such as members, beneficiaries, employers, providers, health professionals and citizens in general.

He explained that it houses the General Directorate headed by Zoé Robledo, nine regulatory directorates, the meeting room of the H. Technical Council, the offices of Afore XXI, the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris), the IMSS Foundation, Telecommunications, the General Secretariat, the Institute’s Historical Collection and a heliport.

Islas Campos pointed out that the Central Building has several works inside, such as the mural “Mexico” by Jorge Gonzalez Camarena, which represents the thesis that the country is an evolving force to build a great nation; in the lobby of the Juan Moises Calleja Garcia Theater, the mural “Maternity” by Federico Garcia Cantu.
