#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated the approval – in general and in particular – in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies of the constitutional reform that incorporates the National Guard (GN) into the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), which will guarantee the professionalism and discipline of the corporation in public security tasks.
“If it becomes, like the Army and the Air Force, a branch of the Ministry of Defense, we have the guarantee that it will remain and will continue to act with rectitude (…) If the National Guard remains dependent on the Ministry of Defense, long life. If not, we will get another García Luna,” he mentioned.

“I am very happy and, moreover, calm because the approval of the reform for the National Guard to depend on the Ministry of Defense will mean that all the effort we have made to create the National Guard, which has meant in five years to create an institution that already has the support of the majority of the people, that all this effort will not be wasted, that all this effort is not thrown overboard with the passage of time, that this is not destroyed, that what happened with the Federal Police, which began with (Ernesto) Zedillo and was managed by (Genaro) García Luna and became corrupt, does not happen again,” he added.

In a morning press conference, the President highlighted that the National Guard has close to 500 barracks and 130,000 members dedicated to pacifying the country.

“All these elements have undergone training, there is discipline, the members of the National Guard have been under the command of officers of the Ministry of Defense. We have had no problems of abuses of authority, of human rights violations, of massacres committed by the National Guard,” he said.
