#SRE.- Within the framework of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, the Mexican delegation participated in the Security Council’s open debate “Leadership for Peace” and in the II Meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers.

On behalf of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Joel Hernández García, attended the Security Council open debate “Leadership for Peace”.

During his intervention, the Ambassador stressed the need to “analyze how the Security Council fits into the new impetus to multilateralism agreed in the Pact for the Future”, since “it is clear that in such pressing conflicts as those in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, the Security Council has lagged far behind […] the frequent use of the veto has only damaged the image of this body”.

In this regard, the undersecretary shared four key points to strengthen effective leadership: be efficient and address the causes of crises, leaving behind rhetorical speeches; greater use of regional organizations; limit the use of the veto and stop imposing national considerations over the collective good; and strengthen the powers of the General Assembly.

“Mexico is a country convinced of multilateralism and the preponderant role of the United Nations […] let us show the world that the Security Council has leadership for peace,” concluded the diplomat.

On the other hand, the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, María Teresa Mercado Pérez, and the Director General for Europe and G20 Sherpa, Jennifer Feller Enríquez, headed the Mexican delegation that attended the II Meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers, convened by Brazil, as president pro tempore of the group. The purpose of the meeting was to analyze the reform of global governance institutions.

In her speech, Undersecretary Mercado called on G20 members to contribute to the comprehensive reform of the global governance system in order to make it more inclusive, efficient and democratic.
