#IMSS.- In one year, the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) Hospital de Traumatología, Ortopedia y Rehabilitación “Dr. Victorio de la Fuente Narváez” achieved 14 organ and tissue procurements, three of which are multi-organ and eleven multi-tissue, where 47 organs and tissues were obtained that have benefited more than a hundred patients with various ailments and even terminal diseases.

According to the records of the National Transplant Center (CENATRA), this hospital located in Magdalenas de las Salinas, in Mexico City, is one of the centers with the highest number of multi-organ donations at national level.

The head of the Hospital Coordination of Organ and Tissue Donation (CHDOTT) of this UMAE, Dr. Fredy Antonio Chávez González, assured that organ donation is the most generous and altruistic act a person can give; a single donor helps up to 50 patients to have a better quality of life.

In the framework of the National Day of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, to be celebrated on September 26, he highlighted that currently in our country more than 23 thousand people are on the waiting list to improve their quality of life or preserve it.

“The main activity of this Coordination is the promotion of the donation culture, through continuous work throughout the year. There are weekly and monthly talks in the waiting rooms where it is explained to the relatives that this decision must be informed and be convinced when the case arises,” he added.

He emphasized that the CHDOTTs have the responsibility of identifying patients who are potential donors when they suffer an accident or trauma and the procurement process is sought once the possibilities to save their life are exhausted.

“When the medical staff determines that there is encephalic death or cardiac arrest, we intervene and carry out an evaluation to verify which organs and tissues are viable, we request an interview with the relatives and they authorize their patient to be a donor or not,” he added.
