#Quintana Roo.- After completing the work of the Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (PROMEZA) by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced the reopening of the “El Meco” Archaeological Zone, at kilometer 2.7 of the Puerto Juárez-Punta Sam highway, on the mainland of Isla Mujeres.
“This is one of the oldest and most emblematic archaeological jewels of the north coast of Quintana Roo. A beautiful place with ceremonial structures, altars, shrines,” explained Governor Mara Lezama as she invited the people of Quintana Roo to visit this archaeological zone and tourists and visitors to make it an obligatory stop here in Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
Mara Lezama congratulated the INAH workers and archaeologists for the extraordinary work done to rescue and restore this archaeological site. She also congratulated the SEDENA personnel for the infrastructure works. He recalled that the state government donated the land.
The event for the reopening of “El Meco” was organized by INAH, Quintana Roo Center, in coordination with the government of the state of Quintana Roo. Representing the general director of INAH, Diego Prieto Hernández, was the director of the INAH Quintana Roo Center, Margarito Molina Rendón, and was attended by municipal authorities from Benito Juárez and Isla Mujeres, as well as authorities from the Ministry of National Defense.
The reopening of “El Meco” allows showing the world the results obtained in research, restoration and infrastructure construction after the conclusion of the Archaeological Zones Improvement Program (PROMEZA).
