Sleeping well improves mental health and reduces the likelihood of suffering from chronic degenerative diseases: IMSS / @Tu_IMSS >>>
#IMSS.- The benefits of sleeping well are reflected in better mental health, having a clear thinking to achieve a good performance the following day and reducing the probability of presenting chronic degenerative diseases, assured psychologist Tomás Delfino Alcántara Ramírez, specialist assigned to the Mental Health and Addictions Coordination of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
He explained that having a restful sleep implies feeling recovered from the wear and tear of the previous day, allows for clear thinking and contributes to making better decisions.
In commemoration of World Sleep Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow, March 14, Alcántara Ramírez indicated that this process is part of our daily life and occupies a third of people’s lives.
He pointed out that sleep is a natural process where the brain continues to function actively, allowing a reduction in consciousness and a decrease in the stimuli around us.
In addition, he said, it contributes to growth, to higher cognitive functions such as memory, learning, attention, concentration and it is also part of mental and physical health.
However, to achieve a restful sleep, he said, it is necessary to have a quiet environment, isolated from noise, with an adequate temperature; reduce stress, avoid the consumption of stimulants such as coffee, alcohol and nicotine, have a regular sleep schedule and limit the use of screens, because the light they give off stimulates the brain.
The mental health specialist emphasized that the IMSS provides care for sleep problems with the participation of a multidisciplinary work team, in coordination with the three levels of care, and has treatments such as non-pharmacological treatment, which requires good psychoeducation to take care of sleep hygiene through regular schedules, physical activity during the day, avoiding the consumption of coffee, nicotine and alcoholic beverages, as well as improvements in eating habits, among other activities.
He pointed out that the pharmacological treatment must be adapted to each particular case; that is to say, each person must be diagnosed specifically.
