#IMSS.- The Transplant Unit of the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad (UMAE) Hospital de Especialidades “Dr. Antonio Fraga Mouret” of the Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) La Raza, celebrated a milestone in its history by successfully performing its 100th liver transplant, which positions this program as one of the most productive nationwide, despite the fact that it began operations in 2018.
Dr. Lorena Noriega Salas, a surgeon attached to the Transplant Unit, expressed her satisfaction with this progress and said that one of the main challenges is to keep patients in the best medical conditions, since a liver donation can occur at any time to people on the waiting list.
He affirmed that one of the key factors in this program is teamwork, “there are many specialties involved in the process and they help us so that we can execute the final step, which is the transplant,” he explained.
He indicated that liver procedures require a great deal of preparation, more time in the operating room and the intervention of a greater number of specialists; however, the effort is worth it when the recovery of the patients and the improvement in their quality of life is observed.
Such is the case of Claudia, who suffered from cirrhosis due to autoimmune hepatitis, a disease that mainly affects women between 30 and 40 years of age and which represents the majority of the transplant waiting list in the case of the CMN La Raza Specialty Hospital.
After a long process of evaluation and waiting, she underwent surgery on March 1. Her surgery was complex due to the advanced stage of the condition, but her body responded favorably to the new organ from the moment of its placement.
“My evolution has been very good, I am no longer yellow, my skin is beginning to recover its color, I have a lot of energy and appetite, I maintain my diet and my care; I thank my family for being aware of me to continue improving,” she shared.
The patient recalled that her fight against the disease began in 2016, when during her pregnancy she was diagnosed with hepatic cholestasis. Later, after a series of studies, the presence of primary biliary hepatic cirrhosis was confirmed; at the beginning her health was stable, but in 2024 her condition worsened as she presented internal bleeding, portal hypertension, encephalopathy and fatigue, among other problems.
