Lifestyle changes with physical exercise, healthy eating and a low-calorie diet, factors to prevent colon cancer / @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- Preventing colon cancer is related to changes in lifestyle through physical exercise, a healthy diet and a diet low in calories, saturated fats and processed foods, said the coordinator of Medical Programs of the Oncology Care Coordination of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Dr. María de la Luz García Tinoco.

She explained that important factors such as physical activity and stopping the consumption of substances such as alcohol and tobacco could allow up to 40 percent of all cancers to be prevented.

And although there are conditions, such as genetics and heredity, these cases only occupy 5 to 10 percent, which is why it is important to be constantly on the lookout for symptoms that could lead to suspect the presence of the disease, as well as to undergo screening studies, in order to make an early detection, have a better chance in the face of an incipient disease and have a chance of survival.

In the framework of World Colon Cancer Day, which is commemorated on March 31, Dr. Garcia Tinoco emphasized that the prevention of this pathology must start with the families to “teach and educate us about healthy eating habits and a healthy lifestyle.

Social Security, she said, has the treatments and specialists who are in charge of providing care to patients with colon and rectal cancer. Among them, those of the oncology team: the surgical oncologist, the medical oncologist, who provides the systemic treatment, and the radiation oncologist; in addition, it has related medical specialties to support the beneficiaries.

He affirmed that one of the main treatments for colon cancer is surgical therapy in oncology.

In this way, he explained, the surgical oncologist determines the location of the tumor, plans surgery, removes the tumor and performs a pathology analysis to determine the extension it has reached in the intestine, as well as radiological studies to determine if it has spread beyond the colon, which is known as metastatic disease.
