#Cultura.- On October 25, 2023, Hurricane Otis struck Acapulco with unprecedented force, leaving the port in a state of emergency. More than two years after the disaster, reconstruction efforts not only seek to restore the damaged infrastructure, but also to rethink the future of the city under a more just, inclusive and sustainable approach. As part of this transformation, the Resignifying Acapulco dialogue and reflection roundtables emerged, an initiative promoted by the Acapulco City Council, the Colegio de San Ildefonso and various collaborating entities. Its purpose is to generate concrete proposals for a new city model that strengthens the social fabric, promotes sustainability and redefines the port’s development.
The reflection process, carried out between September 2024 and January 2025, focused on crucial issues such as urban resilience, sustainability, the right to housing, culture and regenerative tourism. These meetings brought together a diversity of expert voices, including architects, urban planners, writers, historians, environmentalists and cultural managers, all working collaboratively to design a viable and transformative future for Acapulco. The goal was not only to repair the physical damage caused by Hurricane Otis, but also to rebuild the social and cultural fabric of the city.
Participants included Anne Ivonne López Durán, Carmen Tostado, Claudia Líbana Nacif Heredia, Citlali Guerrero Morales, Christopher Brito Salgado, Eduardo Vázquez Martín, Edgardo Bermejo Mora, Ernesto Betancourt, Guadalupe García Bautista, Jeanette Rojas Dib, Jorge Antonio Alfaro González, Juan Manuel Barnard Ávila, Linayme Paulette Reyes Avila, Luis Arturo Aguirre Ceballos, Luis Vargas Santacruz, Manuel Ignacio Ruz Vargas, Manuel Orlando Lozano Ortiz, Marxitania Ortega Flores, Miguel Arizmendi Herrera, Naxhelli Ruiz Rivera, Pedro Francisco Serrano Carreto, Roberto Eibenschutz Hartman, Roxana Cortés Molina and Luis Vargas Santacruz. The report delivered to the local authorities includes the proposals and conclusions derived from these dialogues, with the purpose of translating them into concrete actions that will guide the comprehensive reconstruction of the city in the coming years; it is available at this link: https://www.sanildefonso.org.mx/acapulco/memoria.html.
This effort is not limited only to an exchange of ideas, but invites the whole society, through art and critical thinking, to actively participate in the regeneration of Acapulco. The Laboratorio Acapulco exhibition is not only a space of memory, but a call to collective action, inviting citizens, authorities and private sector actors to work hand in hand in the reconstruction of a more equitable and resilient Acapulco. The roundtables highlighted the urgent need to consolidate joint efforts between the three levels of government, civil society and the private sector, seeking to build a city that looks to the future with a long-term vision and inclusive planning.
