#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), through the implementation of telemedicine nationwide, has been able to propose better diagnostic and treatment alternatives, streamline consultations, and improve the referral of pediatric cancer patients to one of the 36 State Reference Centers for the Care of Children with Cancer (OncoCREAN).
During the 166th session of the working group for the care of minors undergoing cancer treatment at the IMSS, the head of the Oncology Care Coordination, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, indicated that thanks to this technological mechanism, the best diagnostic and treatment alternatives are proposed, and consultations are streamlined with the support of all IMSS units.
In a virtual meeting between Social Security authorities and the mothers and fathers of minors with cancer, Enrique López reported that of the 192 OncoCREAN telemedicine sessions, 170 highly complex clinical cases have been examined.
Also, through this tool, 10 training sessions were delivered on crucial topics such as palliative care, Golden Hour, the Early Warning Assessment Scale (EVAT), educational offerings, the use and preparation of immunotherapy, and handling bad news. Ten keynote lectures were held with national and international experts, who addressed topics such as the results of protocols in the United States and Brazil, the importance of immunophenotyping, and the use of immunotherapy.
He mentioned that these IMSS telemedicine sessions have been instrumental in standardizing treatments and improving the comprehensive care of cancer patients. In addition, academic sessions have been shared on relevant topics for cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment, which has enabled the use and application of new drugs, including the results of protocols for lymphoblastic leukemia, indications for pegylated asparaginase, and the importance of minimal residual disease.
He emphasized that telemedicine has been a key tool for training and fostering communication among the staff of the 36 Social Security OncoCREAN centers in the country and has promoted timely patient referrals, in accordance with their response capacity.
He noted that the use of this tool in the OncoCREAN care model has made it possible to offer remote assistance services, follow-up teleconsultations, diagnosis and treatment, second opinions, patient administrative management, distance learning for professionals, and online collaborative research and evaluation.
