#SE.- The Ministry of Economy, in collaboration with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), held the regional workshop «Building the Economies of the Future in Latin America and the Caribbean» on May 27 and 28 in Mexico City.
During two days of work, more than 80 high-level panelists—including representatives from governments, multilateral organizations, academia, and civil society—participated in roundtables and technical panels to address the need for a green productive transformation that accelerates the energy transition, promotes sustainable development, and fosters greater regional integration.
This meeting was part of the project «Regional Integration and Industrial Policy for Transformational Change and Resilience in Latin America» and is aligned with the objectives of Plan Mexico, the national roadmap for the development of a green, inclusive, and resilient industrial policy. Plan Mexico seeks to leverage the country’s competitive advantages in strategic sectors to promote economic growth with social justice and environmental sustainability.
During the workshop, it was highlighted that Latin America and the Caribbean already obtains 33 percent of its energy from renewable sources, compared to the global average of 13 percent. Furthermore, the region possesses more than 50 percent of the world’s lithium reserves, more than a third of its copper reserves, and more than half of its silver reserves—minerals essential for the transition to a decarbonized economy.
Some of the topics discussed included:
- The coordination of green industrial policies.
- The integration of regional value chains.
- Governance mechanisms to support sustainable productive transformation.
- The role of innovation and public-private collaboration in the green transition.
The keynote speakers included Vidal Llerenas Morales, Undersecretary of Industry and Trade of Mexico; Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD; Jorge Mario Martínez Piva, Acting Director of ECLAC’s Subregional Headquarters in Mexico; and Laura Carvalho, Global Director of Economy and Climate Change at the Open Society Foundations.
The workshop marks the beginning of a series of national meetings that will seek to strengthen institutional capacities for the design and implementation of green productive development strategies.
