#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reaffirms its commitment to the comprehensive well-being of the older adult population by promoting awareness among families and staff about the aging process and the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles at an early age.
The Delegation Coordinator of First-Level Social Work of the Decentralized Administrative Operations Body (OOAD) in Mexico City South (CDMX), Rosalba Sandoval Ávila, explained that healthy aging is the process in which people maintain their physical, mental, and social well-being; as they age, they retain their autonomy, independence, and quality of life for as long as possible.
She explained that the IMSS promotes institutional, family, and personal actions that contribute to a dignified, active, and well-being old age.
She indicated that one of the recommendations is to begin adopting healthy lifestyle habits from an early age, when it is essential to be consistent with daily exercise, a balanced diet, complete vaccinations, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.
“Human beings are social beings; during the aging stage, support is more necessary than ever. Our seniors should not be left alone,” emphasized Ms. Sandoval Ávila.
She noted that the Institute offers its beneficiaries various services to support and support the population in active and healthy aging, including: the “Active Aging PrevenIMSS” Health Promotion Educational Strategy, which promotes self-care among seniors, reinforcing protective factors, life skills, and healthy habits through educational sessions conducted by Social Work staff and Health Promoters from the Family Medicine Units, providing seniors with tools that enable them to reflect and make informed decisions.
In addition, she said, the IMSS offers preventive checkups for the early detection of diseases such as breast, cervical, and prostate cancer; free vaccinations according to the National Health Card scheme; Health promotion, with the participation of the entire healthcare team.
Sandoval Ávila affirmed that promoting good treatment for older adults is an institutional priority, recognizing their life experiences and their value within society. “This commitment extends to families, who play a fundamental role by providing emotional support, understanding, and patience to foster a culture of respect and empathy, key to their well-being and to building a more humane and inclusive society.”
