Mexican expert Saúl Vicente Vázquez elected to the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination / @SRE_mx >>>
#SRE.- Mexican Saúl Vicente Vázquez was elected today by 129 votes to serve on the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination (CERD) for the 2026-2030 term.
The Mexican expert has extensive experience defending the human rights of Indigenous peoples.
A native of the Zapotec indigenous community, born in Juchitán, Oaxaca, Vázquez holds a degree in Economics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a law degree from the University of the Valley of Mexico.
At the national level, he served as a member of the Mexican government’s Technical Advisory Committee for the drafting of the General Law on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities. At the international level, he participated in the negotiations and approval of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.
As a candidate for the Committee’s expert, Saúl Vicente Vázquez pledged to promote cultural relevance and the mainstreaming of human rights in the Committee’s activities and the implementation of the Convention on Racial Discrimination.
He also pledged to highlight the collective and individual rights of groups in vulnerable situations, particularly Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.
The Mexican government wishes him every success in his role, which will undoubtedly be fundamental to promoting the rights of Indigenous peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean.
