#ISSSTE, #México.– Specialists from the Regional Hospital (HR) “Lic. Adolfo López Mateos”, attached to the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (#ISSSTE), under the direction of General Director Martí Batres Guadarrama, performed a Cataract Surgery Day for the benefit of 26 beneficiaries, who underwent surgery to recover their vision and improve their quality of life.
The head of the Ophthalmology Service of the hospital, located in Mexico City, Gisele Gabriela Navarrete Orta, pointed out that the procedure was performed last July 6, and its objective was to reduce the number of surgeries pending for this pathology, which is the main cause of reversible blindness in the world.
“Cataract is the opacity of a natural lens that is behind the brown part of the eye called crystalline lens, this lens gradually becomes opaque with age and nothing removes this opacity, neither with drops nor any other type of treatment other than surgery,” the specialist pointed out.
He indicated that the procedures were carried out by means of the phacoemulsification technique, which consists of the extraction of the opaque crystalline lens, by means of ultrasound, to later place an intraocular lens that allows the patient to recover his vision.
