Operators of public transportation units join the campaign “Nos Movemos Seguras” (We Move Safely) promoted by the Government of the State of Mexico through the Ministries of Mobility and Women’s Affairs, in coordination with authorities of the municipality of Tlalnepantla, so that female users can travel safely and without being victims of harassment.

Mayor Raciel Pérez Cruz assured that this marks the determination of the three levels of government to combat harassment of women in public transportation, “we are not willing to normalize this problem, we have to raise our voices and build public policies that mean progress to eradicate any form of violence in public transportation, we want that when a woman boards a unit, she does it with confidence and certainty that she will not be assaulted”.

Addressing the transportation sector, the Mayor acknowledged the willingness of this union and said that with their support “we are making decisive progress in being part of the solution and not part of the problem, thank you for your willingness to work together on this goal we have set”.

The Secretary for Women of the Government of the State of Mexico, Mónica Chávez Durán, reaffirmed the commitment of municipal and state authorities to raise awareness and sensitize the population about the gender violence experienced by women, which is neither tolerable nor acceptable in any environment.

She detailed that; according to this year’s National Urban Security Survey, the State of Mexico ranks second in prevalence of community violence, being the bus or microbus the most common point in which their development, wellbeing and dignity is attacked.

“Through the campaign ‘Nos Movemos Seguras’, we want to make a deep cultural change to stop normalizing harassment and other expressions of violence, harassment is a crime and prevention is fundamental to avoid it, we seek to generate real changes in cultural practices on sexual harassment, specifically in the behavior and attitudes of the aggressors”, mentioned Chávez Durán in his speech.
