Mexico strengthens its national breastfeeding strategy Mexico strengthens its national breastfeeding strategy
#MinistryOfHealth, #Mexico.– The Mexican Ministry of Health issued a strong call to place breastfeeding at the center of public policy as one of the most powerful strategies for prevention and well-being for the population.
During the National Strategic Meeting on Breastfeeding, Health Secretary David Kershenobich emphasized that work is underway to establish a single National Health System, with a clear priority: moving from reactive medical care to comprehensive prevention.
“Within the first 1,000 days of life, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is essential to ensure the healthy development of girls and boys. It is the most equitable and sustainable food: it strengthens the immune system, prevents obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, and improves cognitive and emotional development,” he stated.
The Health Minister acknowledged that Mexico has not yet reached optimal levels of breastfeeding and highlighted the importance of concrete measures, such as expanding lactation centers and protecting women’s rights to breastfeed in safe environments.
