Bloomberg Philanthropies recognizes the Mexican government as a global leader in anti-smoking policies / @SSalud_mx

#MinistryOfHealth#Mexico.–  As part of the Mexican government’s commitment to public health, the event «Advances and Prospects in Tobacco and Nicotine Control: Mexico as an International Reference» was held in the Fernando Rébora Gutiérrez Auditorium of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER).

During his remarks, the National Commissioner for Mental Health and Addictions, Francisco José Gutiérrez Rodríguez, recognized the collaborative work carried out by the Mexican government, which has allowed the country to be recognized again by Bloomberg Philanthropies, this time for progress in implementing policies that prohibit the advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of tobacco products. He especially thanked the leadership of the Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich, as well as the Undersecretary of Health Policies and Population Well-being, Ramiro López Elizalde.

He noted that this international recognition is not only a source of pride, but also a shared responsibility between authorities and civil society to continue developing public policies based on scientific evidence, free from conflicts of interest, that inform and prevent the consequences of tobacco and nicotine consumption.

He also noted that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, in addition to representing a high economic cost to health systems due to the treatment of diseases derived from smoke exposure. In this regard, he emphasized the urgency of moving forward, with the technical support of the Legislative Branch, in implementing the constitutional ban on electronic devices for tobacco and nicotine consumption, as part of a national health protection agenda.
