In Mexico City, Mauricio Tabe demands direct funding to meet tourism demand for the 2026 World Cup / @mauriciotabe @AlcaldiaMHmx
#AlcaldíaMiguelHidalgo, #México.- The mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mauricio Tabe Echartea, called on the Mexico City government to allocate additional resources to municipalities in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. He proposed the creation of a specific World Cup Fund for each district, earmarked exclusively for urban services, security, and maintenance of public spaces. He emphasized that this measure should be applied especially in areas with high tourist influx.
During a press conference, Tabe emphasized that the capital has a unique opportunity to establish itself as an international destination. The arrival of millions of visitors requires, he said, optimal conditions in streets, lighting, urban order, and civil protection. He emphasized that it’s not just about looking good, but also about offering a safe and enjoyable experience.
The mayor insisted that the resources should be allocated directly, without diversion for other purposes, and with transparency. «We require that this money be used only for cleaning, lighting, public order, and emergency response,» he stated. He asserted that a positive urban image will be key to projecting the city as a world-class tourism capital.
He also explained that funds are needed both to prepare the city before the event and to address the aftermath. He mentioned that repaving streets, ensuring proper lighting, and organizing wiring are urgent tasks. He added that the area must be ready not only to receive tourists, but also to guarantee the quality of life of its residents.
Finally, the mayor noted that the economic benefits generated in municipalities like Miguel Hidalgo must be reinvested locally. He warned that it would not be fair for the negative impact to remain in the area while resources are redirected to other areas. «If the benefits are generated here, the resources should stay here,» he concluded.
