Sheinbaum Pardo Unveils Landmark Program to Save Mexico’s Native Corn and Support Producers / @Claudiashein @GobinoMX >>>
#FederalGovernment, #Mexico.- In a significant move during the celebration of National Corn Day, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo officially unveiled the ambitious «No Corn, No Country» program. This initiative is designed to deeply connect corn production with the genuine well-being of producers, specifically by passionately championing the cultivation of native corn. The core strategy involves practical supports such as establishing guaranteed prices and promoting direct-to-consumer sales of finished goods like tortillas, all manufactured directly by the farmers themselves.
The President shared insights from her travels, noting the widespread desire for a comprehensive guaranteed price for corn, something not currently enjoyed by all small-scale farmers. «Now that I’ve been traveling around the country, many people are saying: ‘Guaranteed Price for corn.’» This new program will prioritize ensuring that corn, predominantly grown by small producers in central and southeastern Mexico, continues to thrive. She affirmed, «people enjoy well-being by producing corn. That is the «No Corn, No Country» program that we will soon present,» during the «Las mañaneras del pueblo» press conference.
This bold program is built upon the foundational belief that «Without corn there is no country,» strengthening the impact of existing supports like Production for Well-being and the Free Fertilizer program. Crucially, it complements the constitutional reforms to articles 4 and 27, which are essential for safeguarding Mexico’s rich diversity of corn varieties and implementing a definitive prohibition on planting genetically modified corn. These legal protections are paramount to the nation’s agricultural sovereignty.
President Sheinbaum emphasized the gravity of the constitutional reform: «If we hadn’t established in the Constitution that it is prohibited to plant genetically modified corn in Mexico, all these varieties would be at risk.» She underscored that these unique varieties, domesticated over thousands of years by indigenous peoples and farmers, are a national treasure that must not be lost. The upcoming «No Corn, No Country» is positioned as an even more ambitious framework, alongside existing aid, to secure the future and support the cultivation of native corn, the corn native to Mexico.
