In CDMX, Alcaldía Miguel Hidalgo Mayor Launches ‘Vigilant Driver’ Scheme to Boost Public Safety / @mauriciotabe @AlcaldiaMHmx

#AlcaldíaMiguelHidalgo#MéxicoCity.-The Mayor of Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico City, Mauricio Tabe, has inaugurated the «Conductor Vigilante» (Vigilant Driver) Programme, a scheme designed to enhance passenger safety across the borough’s public transport network. Drivers from various local minibus and taxi routes will now act as the «eyes» of the authorities, promptly reporting any criminal activity they witness. This cooperative effort officially commenced with the goal of strengthening the security infrastructure within the area and establishing a new level of civic surveillance and community protection.

Announcing the launch near the Normal Metro station, specifically from Route 28, Mayor Tabe confirmed the programme is beginning with the commitment of 300 drivers, with many more expected to join soon. He stressed that the Miguel Hidalgo Council is making daily efforts to ‘shield’ its neighbourhoods and to safeguard residents, allowing them to «walk with freedom and without fear.» The initiative is a direct measure to fulfil the administration’s core promise to significantly improve public security and restore community confidence in local travel.

The Mayor elaborated on the programme’s purpose, stating: «The programme is ‘Conductor Vigilante’, where the routes will in solidarity help us transmit the message to the operators so that every driver of a unit, of a microbus, of a minibus and of a taxi becomes one more observer, one more pair of eyes that watches over our borough.» This clarification highlights the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining order and proactively deterring crime. Furthermore, Vigilant Drivers are encouraged to report «not just one type of crime, but any situation that puts the security of our residents at risk,» ensuring comprehensive oversight.

Following the placement of the initial micro-perforated signs on Route 28, which alone comprises 186 units, Mauricio Tabe extended an open invitation for more operators to enlist in this innovative partnership. Routes 4, 5, 46 and 17 are already participating, alongside several taxi ranks, including those at Rufina/Avenida Jalisco and La Granje/Ejército Nacional, underscoring its broad scope. The Mayor concluded by reiterating that security is a collective endeavour where everyone has a crucial role to play in preventing, reporting, and alerting the authorities so they can act swiftly.
